For wellness professionals, the question comes up again and again: Should I get another certification?
It feels productive. It feels responsible. It feels like the next logical step before you raise your rates, launch your program, or finally commit to building the business you keep thinking about.
But what if — most of the time — it is not?
In this episode of the Wellness Pro Show, Cate Stillman sits down with Carey Peters, Co-Founder of Health Coach Institute (HCI), to have the conversation that most certification programs do not want you to hear. What Carey shares — from inside one of the largest coach training organizations ever built — will make you rethink how you invest your time, your money, and your confidence.
From Actress to Accidental Entrepreneur: Carey's Origin Story
Carey Peters did not set out to build a multi-million dollar coaching empire. She started as a working actress with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from DePaul University — and a quiet, private desire to help people that she had never told anyone about.
When a dry spell in her acting career sent her searching for something more meaningful, she stumbled across the concept of health coaching. It was not the obvious path. But it was the one that did not require seven years of graduate school and six figures of debt. She enrolled in a training program — more as a personal experiment than a career move — and came out the other side completely on fire.
What followed was a decade of building, failing, learning, and eventually co-founding Health Coach Institute with her partner Stacey Morgan Stern. HCI trained tens of thousands of coaches across more than 50 countries before a successful exit in 2023. Carey now works at the executive level with founders and high-achieving leaders navigating their next chapter.
Her perspective on certifications is hard-won, deeply practical, and refreshingly honest.
The Certification Trap: What "One More Credential" Is Really Costing You
Carey has a name for what she sees happening across the wellness industry: certification collecting.
It looks like professional development. It feels like progress. But underneath it, she says, it is often something else entirely — a comfortable, expensive way to avoid the one thing that would actually move your practice forward: working with clients.
“You will have ten certifications. You will have fifteen business trainings. And you still will not be in a place where you feel confident.”
The hard truth Carey shares is this: confidence does not come from credentials. It comes from doing the work — from sitting across from a client, real or practice, and discovering in real time that what you have to offer is genuinely valuable.
Every coaching school produces graduates who struggle with confidence. That is not a flaw in the training. It is simply the nature of a skill that can only be proven in practice. The solution is not another program. It is more clients.
So When Does a Certification Actually Make Sense?
Carey is not anti-certification. She built one of the most successful ones in the world. But she is precise about when pursuing — or creating — a certification program is genuinely the right move.
For practitioners considering enrolling in a program, her framework is simple: ask what problem this credential actually solves for your specific audience at point of sale. Accreditation bodies and letters after your name matter only to the extent that your clients care about them — and often, they care far less than you think.
For practitioners considering creating their own certification, the green light is even more specific. You are ready when:
- You have a proven methodology — not just an idea, but a system you have tested with real clients over time
- People are already asking you to teach them what you do — not because you pitched it, but because they experienced your results and want to replicate them
- You have the audience, the followers, or the client roster that demonstrates genuine demand
As Cate puts it from her own experience building Yoga Health Coaching: “People were coming to me and saying, how are you doing this? What’s going on behind the scenes? And I was like, well, I’ll make a little system for you.”
That organic pull — not a business plan, not a gap in the market — is what signals you are ready.
What HCI Taught Carey About Building at Scale
When Carey and Stacey partnered with a group of investors to build HCI in 2014, they were betting on a hypothesis: that putting relatable, credible women in front of an audience of women who wanted to become coaches would take significant market share. They were right.
HCI grew from zero to a multi-million dollar organization by combining two things most wellness businesses keep separate — a powerful coaching methodology and a sophisticated paid advertising and lead generation system. Carey is direct about the lesson: the leads are where most wellness pros get stuck. A great offer with no traffic is still a stalled business.
The other insight from HCI that applies directly to wellness professionals building their own programs: the dual-founder model worked because it removed the guru dynamic. With two faces representing the brand, the audience had more to connect to — and the emotional weight of holding thousands of people through transformation was shared rather than carried by one person alone.
Credentials vs. Confidence: What Clients Are Actually Buying
One of the most clarifying moments in this conversation comes when Carey breaks down what clients are actually purchasing when they hire a coach or enroll in a program.
They are not buying your ICF credential. They are not buying your National Board certification or your master’s degree. They are buying the belief that you can help them get from where they are to where they want to be.
That belief is built through clarity of offer, strength of methodology, quality of results — and the stories of real people whose lives changed because of your work. No certification substitutes for that. And no amount of training replaces the embodied confidence that only comes from doing the work repeatedly, in real sessions, with real human beings.
As Cate and Carey agree: earn while you learn. Start before you feel ready. The doing is the training that actually matters.
Want Coaching, Visibility, and a Published Conversation About Your Practice?
This is exactly the kind of conversation Cate Stillman wants to have with you — live, on the record, and published for the wider wellness community to hear.
The Wellness Pro Hotline is a new format Cate is running: you book a call, you get laser coaching on whatever you are actually wrestling with right now — your club offer, your niche, your pricing, how to stop trading hours for income — and the conversation gets published on the Wellness Pro Hotline YouTube channel.
You get real coaching. You get visibility. And other wellness professionals learn exactly what you do and who you serve — which means cross-referrals, not competition.
As Cate puts it: “The more we know what each other do, the more we send each other the right people.”
This is how she built the Yoga Health Coaching community. It worked then. It works now.
You sign up. You get on a call. It turns into a podcast. And the right people find you.
